What is the definition of coaching?

The International Coach Federation (ICF), defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Coaching honours the client as the expert in his/her life and work and believes that every client is creative, resourceful, and whole. Standing on this foundation, the coach’s responsibility is to:

• Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve;

• Encourage client’s self-discovery;

• Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies; and

• Hold the client responsible and accountable.

As a professional coach, I am…..

I am trained to listen, to observe and to customize my approach to individual client needs. This is a process termed as “Active Listening” and is one of the ICF competencies.

I believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. (A coachable client has within him, all the resources necessary, to achieve what he or she wants).

I encourage solutions and strategies from the client.

My role is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has.

Professional coaching is a distinct service, which focuses on an individual’s life – as it relates to goal setting, outcome creation and personal change management. In an effort to understand what a coach is, it can be helpful to distinguish coaching from other professions that provide personal or organizational support.

What makes coaching different?

  • Coaching is supports personal and professional growth, based on individual-initiated change, in pursuit of specific actionable outcomes, which are linked to personal or professional success.
  • Coaching is future focused. Therapy, on the other hand, deals with healing pain, dysfunction and conflict within an individual or a relationship between two or more individuals. The focus is often on resolving situations or difficulties arising from the past, which hamper an individual’s emotional functioning in the present, improving overall psychological functioning, and dealing with present life and work circumstances in more emotionally healthy ways. Therapy outcomes often include improved emotional/feeling states. While positive feelings/emotions may be a natural outcome of coaching, the primary focus is on creating actionable strategies for achieving specific goals in one’s work or personal life. The emphasis in a coaching relationship is on action, accountability and follow through.

Consulting: Consultants may be retained by individuals or organizations for the purpose of accessing specialised expertise.While consulting approaches vary widely, there is often an assumption that the consultant diagnoses problems and prescribes and sometimes implements solutions. In general, the assumption with coaching is that individuals or teams are capable of generating their own solutions, with the coach supplying supportive, discovery-based approaches and frameworks.

Mentoring: Mentoring, which can be thought of as guiding from one’s own experience or sharing of experience in a specific area of industry or career development, is sometimes confused with coaching. While some coaches provide mentoring as part of their coaching, such as in mentor coaching of new coaches, coaches are not typically mentors to those they coach.

A few reasons for which people choose to work with coaches….

  • There is something at stake (a challenge, stretch goal or opportunity), and it is urgent, compelling or exciting or all of these.
  • A gap exists in knowledge, skills, confidence or resources. Sometimes, conventional efforts to bridge these gaps fail.
  • There is a desire to accelerate results.
  • There is a lack of clarity and there are choices to be made.
  • The individual is extremely successful, and success has begun to become problematic.
  • Work and life are out of balance, creating unwanted consequences.
  • One has not identified his or her core strengths and how best to leverage them

To be successful, coaching asks certain things of the individual, all of which begin with intention. Additionally, clients are encouraged to:

  • Focus – on one’s self, be willing to address tough questions, the hard truths–and one’s success.
  • Observe – the behaviours and communications of others.
  • Listening – to one’s intuition, assumptions, judgments, and to the way one sounds when one speaks.
  • Self discipline – to challenge existing attitudes, beliefs and behaviours and to develop new ones which serve one’s goals in a superior way.
  • Decisive actions – however uncomfortable, in order to reach for the extraordinary.
  • Compassion – for one’s self as one experiments with new behaviours, experiences setbacks-and for others as they do the same.
  • Humour – committing to not take one’s self so seriously, using humour to lighten and brighten any situation.
  • Personal control – maintaining composure in the face of setbacks & unmet expectations, avoiding emotional reactivity.
  • Courage – to reach for more than before, to shift out of being fear based in to being in abundance as a core strategy for success, to engage in continual self examination, to overcome internal and external obstacles.

Is coaching expensive?

Coaching is an investment — in yourself. And, without doubt – you are the best investment you can ever make.

How much time will this take?

Commitment usually drives the level of success. The requirement is simply the time needed to do what’s necessary to improve. Many people like having the regular weekly or monthly calls; others simply want the coach on retainer as part of their team.

How long is a coaching session?

Coaching sessions are normally planned for 60-90 minutes. In addition, I encourage my clients to maintain contact via social media applications like whatsapp, emails and telephone calls, so that they derive the maximum benefit from the process. (Personally, In order to provide the best possible services, I avoid taking on too many clients and restrict myself to between 20-25 clients over a cycle).

What does a coach really do?

A coach helps you see a bigger picture and understand the steps it will take to create this picture, and assists you in making tough decisions. You will have the confidence and support to handle situations and problems that have kept you from achieving business and personal dreams. A coach will ask probing questions to bring out your unique abilities, help you create a vision and plan for the future, and will stay with you while you implement changes. A coach holds you accountable for what you say you’ll do, gives you a push to do more than you would do on your own, and helps you overcome limiting beliefs that are holding you back from success.

  • Assist with forming a plan
  • Collaborate with you on ideas
  • Hold you accountable
  • A coach helps you connect the dots of your life looking forward, instead of backward.

Can the Coaching Agreement be terminated at any stage?

Yes, it is my personal assurance, that you can terminate the coaching agreement at any time. I promise to return the dues for un-utilized sessions instantly. Your satisfaction and personal growth is important for me. At anytime, if I am unable to meet your requirements, you must terminate my services.
